Happy American Chess Day, y'all! And I bet you thought it was just Labor Day.
When I was in fifth grade my two best guy friends, Derek Y. and Tim P., taught me how to play chess. They were (and are) seriously smart. Derek even had a mini digital calculator on his watch. Super smart. Anyway, they took on the no doubt daunting task of teaching me to play a game that I knew nothing about. I like to think I did pretty well. I mean, not Bobby Fischer status, but you know that scene in Back to the Future III when Marty's playing chess with the dog? I totally could have beaten the dog. I realized today that I don't actually own a chess set, so I can't celebrate by playing a game against myself like the Old Guy in that Pixar short like I thought I was going to. All I have are a handful of chess pieces I spray painted to use as decorations for my Alice in Wonderland party. I wonder if there's a National Boggle Day? I win at Boggle, like, all the time.
